The photographer it was Kevin Carter. Kevin Carter is a senior photographer from Johannesburg, South Africa. Soon after he earned this award, he got a lot of criticism, because he did not try to help this child.

A week after he got the award, he eventually committed suicide, due to the very guilt in which attacked.
